- I know I'm probably the only person left of the
planet who wears a road going full face helmet while
riding off road. I've spent so much time aboard road
going machines that I never felt protected enough with
the open or more open design motocross helmets and the
use of thin plastic lens goggles to protect my eyes.
-
- There have been times however that I have had to wear
goggles because of extremely dusty conditions. Goggles
help a great deal in these kinds of situations - but
there can be improvement - enter baby oil. Those small
foam vents that allow air into the chamber to prevent
fogging also pass dirt and dust. Take a couple of minutes
and very carefully apply a very small amount of the baby
oil to the outside surface of the foam rubber using your
finger. The oil will trap the dust outside the eye
chamber and still allow air to flow through to prevent
the fogging.
-
- The operative phrase here is "very small amount." You
can buy a lifetime supply of it for yourself and everyone
you know and all of their friends for less than a couple
of bucks - even if you believe in life after death -
they'll still be oil left. If you ever run out of it
you're using way too much, someone is stealing it or you
have a new baby - and you let your spouse find your
stash.
-
- When necessary wash the whole goggle with soap and
warm water. This will remove the lens treatments and wash
out the baby oil. When they're dry, apply the lens
treatment then the baby oil. Keep the oil off the lens
surface for obvious reasons. Contact lens wearers
appreciate this goggle tip/trick the most. In all
circumstances use anti-fog/anti static spray on the lens
surfaces - I use it on my glasses and my helmet face
shield. This aids in keeping dirt and dust from adhering
to the lens surfaces.
-
- I usually offer a small amount of the oil to buddies
before taking a ride. In addition to not having to stop
every couple of miles for them to clean their eyes it
lets them know that as usual I'll be at the front of the
pack and won't be needing any attached eyewear filter
elements. I do expect them to keep up.
