Ignitions
These ignitions know nothing. They are mechanical devices that simply supply spark at precisely timed intervals. One of the differences in the various brands is the amount of initial advance (bottom end) and the amount of retard (top end). For many riders the stock TRX ignition is plenty. Closing the gap a bit, which is necessary when using the OEM ignition and high compression together is a compromise indeed but not a bad one in most cases.
For riders looking for a bit of an edge there are a couple of areas to look into. One of them is the strength of the spark. In most cases more is better. If the spark plug can be gapped very wide it will expose many more fuel droplets to flame and ignite the mixture that much quicker and more completely. Advancing or retarding the ignition can produce some results though I am (still) of the opinion that combustion chamber shape changes are the preferred method to applying great amounts of initial advance. To me, an engine running a lot of advance is an engine in serious need of combustion chamber shape changes or is not matched well enough to the target rpm and/or tuned pipe selection. This has been proved in two stroke engines and four strokes as well. Ignition advance is the last thing to do to promote a better burn. It would be nice to have enough energy to fire wide plug gaps in high compression situations so I tend to spend more time concentrating on that.
